Global Chip Shortage

Global Chip Shortage

Tue, 8 Jun 2021

You may have noticed that the price of everyday technology has increased significantly over the last 18 months. The main cause of this jump in price is the emerging ‘Global Chip Shortage’, which is tipping the scales of supply and demand in the wrong direction.

What’s caused the shortage?

As with many business challenges recently, the cause is Covid-19. The pandemic prompted many chip foundries to send staff home and cut production significantly over the last year. And considering how many devices – from computers to cars, phones to fridges, now have some form of silicon processor powering them, demand is outstripping supply by a significant margin.
Even though IT leaders like IBM’s president have stated that shortages will carry on until 2022 at the earliest, foundries are ramping up production as fast as possible. When you need IT supplies from us we will initially try to quote you on items that are available and we will advise any lead times given to us for items that cannot be sourced. We have strong relationships with all major UK Wholesalers to ensure our customers get the technology they need in the shortest time possible.
